PA is known for freedom. Unless….

You would think that TWO YEARS of damage to cyber charter student education would be enough. That the waters could clear. That it could be ensured that the measures taken two years in a row don’t hurt these children. But no – PA continues to kick them while they’re already down. Shame on anyone party to this.
Here’s what’s UP ⬆️
$565 MILLION in adequacy funding for districts
$50 MILLION in basic education funding, to be distributed to all districts
$50 MILLION in special education for districts
These are all great things, to be sure – for districts.
But here’s what’s also UP⬆️
District over-reach with home educators; intimidation tactics (showing up at family homes with school police)
Damage to education options
Respect for parent agency is DOWN⬇️
Kids, desperately wishing to escape district because it’s HARMFUL for them, seeking refuge in cyber charter – BANNED unless a judge orders it if they’ve been deemed truant by the district. (They’re allowed to attend district cyber, though.)
Even a federal tax credit program that could help DISTRICT students alongside others can’t get through the Governor’s desk. All he has to do is OPT-IN like TWENTY-SEVEN other states have already. He doesn’t even have to involve the legislature. It could provide scholarships for:
- K-12 tuition at any qualified school including public, private, religious, microschools, homeschool
- Educational materials including books, supplies, curriculum, online educational materials
- Tutoring services
- Dual enrollment courses for college preparation
- Educational therapies such as OT, PT, speech-language, behavioral therapy
- Transportation
PA is known for Philadelphia…Independence Hall…Liberty Bell.. for freedom.
But those who love our children beware, because there is a movement to deny, decrease, and dismantle necessary and life-saving options for children in PA education, rather than increase them. To trap them rather than provide them refuge. And to dictate to parents in the raising of their own children.
Does that sound like freedom to you?
