Public charter schools, cyber charter schools, or charter academies are public schools that operate with a greater degree of independence than traditional district schools. Brick and mortar charter schools are approved by their chartering district (in the case of cyber charters by the PDE).

These schools may receive more applications than they have open seats and must accept students based on a lottery. They are publicly funded.

“Both charter schools and regional charter schools (collectively referred to as ‘charter schools’) are independent public schools established and operated under a charter from the local school board and in which students are enrolled or attend. These schools are commonly referred to as ‘brick-and-mortar’ charter schools and focus on teacher-led discussion and teacher knowledge imparted to students through face-to-face interaction at the schools’ physical facilities located within the boundaries of the school district that granted the charter.”

“The National Alliance for Public Charter Schools is a national nonprofit organization committed to advancing the charter school movement. We help put families in charge of their child’s education, principals in charge of their schools, teachers in charge of leading their classrooms, and students in charge of their futures.”
