Brave & bold from lessons well learned
Sharon Sedlar | January 9, 2025

I remember back to when I first entered the education advocacy realm.
I thought I was brave and bold, but I was not. I was a parent who had been unknowingly undermined. I had placed trust in the education system and professed experts on my own child rather than in my own instincts. I felt that there was nowhere to turn – helpless, powerless, and overall stuck. But now I, as many other parents, say “Never again.” And we help others do and say the same.
Lessons learned:
TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS
Don’t let anyone bully you
Know your rights (and the law) as a parent
Do your research
Realize that you always have options
Retain and protect your parental power, but most importantly
your kids come first!
The PA Constitution states:
The General Assembly shall provide for the maintenance and
support of a thorough and efficient system of public education
to serve the needs of the Commonwealth.
(May 16, 1967, P.L.1037, J.R.3)
And in a February of 2023, Commonwealth Court Judge Renée Cohn Jubelirer ruled that section 14 of the Pennsylvania Constitution
“requires that every student receive a meaningful opportunity to succeed academically, socially, and civically, which requires that all students have access to a comprehensive, effective, and contemporary system of public education…”
What does “meaningful opportunity” and success mean for your child? Are they currently getting it? If not, evaluate your options. Speak with your child. Make a change (or create it) for them. Need information or help? Just reach out to us. We’re here for you.
